What began in 2023 as a celebration in a handful of locations has quickly grown into one of UB’s most spirited global traditions.
On May 8, more than 600 UB alumni gathered in over 20 cities across the U.S. and around the world to celebrate UB Founders Day — UB’s birthday and a powerful reminder of the global reach and enduring pride of the university’s alumni community.
Held annually since 2023, UB Founders Day has become a signature event that connects Bulls of all ages and backgrounds in meaningful, memorable ways. From Buffalo to Boston, Atlanta to Singapore, and Toronto to Turkey, alumni came together to toast UB’s 179th year, share stories, make new connections and show off their True Blue pride.
“UB Founders Day is more than a celebration — it’s a chance for alumni to reflect not only on the impact UB had on their lives, but also to strengthen their connections with one another,” says Thomas McArthur, EdM ’08, associate vice president for alumni engagement and annual giving. “Seeing how far this tradition has traveled in just three years is really impressive.”
UB’s roots stretch back to 1846, when it was founded as a private medical college in downtown Buffalo. Today, it stands as New York State’s flagship university — the largest and most comprehensive institution in the SUNY system — with a vibrant global alumni network more than 308,000 strong. Founders Day offers a moment to honor that history — and look ahead to what’s next.
This year’s celebrations spanned continents, with events hosted in cities including Albany, Atlanta, Boston, Buffalo, Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas–Fort Worth, Denver, Houston, Nashville, New York City, Philadelphia, Rochester, San Francisco, Seattle, Syracuse, Toronto, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, India, Turkey and Vietnam.
No matter the location, the spirit of UB was unmistakable, with alumni decked out in UB gear, raising a glass to the university that helped shape their lives.
“We’re proud of how quickly UB Founders Day has grown,” McArthur says. “It’s a joyful celebration of UB’s past, present and future, and a tradition we know will only get stronger.”
